The EP Dorper and Boergoat Clubs held a very successful auction with Hobson & Co in Graaff Reinet on the 21st January.
The sale kicked off with 41 veld tested Boergoats Rams being offered and they sold at an average of R5406 which is up R1000 per ram from last year. The quality of the rams was better than last year and goats were selected out of an intake of 170. No ram with a visual score of less than 5 was permitted to be auctioned. Lot 2, a stud ram bred by Borsie Strydom of Willowmore achieved the top price of R15500. This ram was sold to Bonginkosi Mavuso from Dundee, Natal. Chippie Poultney sold lot26, a very thick ram for R13000.
78 Dorper ewes next came under the hammer of well known auctioneer Brandon Leer. Bidding was brisk on Type 5 pregnant ewes. The top price went to Abraham Blom of Steynsburg with lot8, a pen of 2 pregnant ewes selling for R3800 each. There was very little interest in non pregnant sheep which sold very cheaply.
The Dorper and White Dorper Rams were of exceptional quality this year with an unprecedented 10 type5 and 35 stud Rams being selected out of an offering of 107 Rams. Hobson & Co were delighted with the outcome of the sale even although 4 Dorper and 6 White Dorper rams were declared not sold.
Leroy Phillips once again sold the 2 top priced Rams, lot1 and lot3 both selling for R16000. Lot1 was sold to a regular supporter of the sale, the Morris Slater Family Trust and lot3 went all the way to Natal, bought by Bonginkosi Mavuso. John Skinner from Wolwefontein paid R12000 for the top priced White Dorper ram which was bred by Gert Lotter who really had a good string of rams on the sale.
This was indeed a great opportunity for farmers to buy outstanding genetics from well known breeders at affordable prices- see table below.
The next chance to buy Boergoat Rams, Dorper Ewes and Dorper and White Dorper Rams is on the 18th February in Tarkastad where the Quattro Boergoat Group will be offering 30 rams and Mickey Phillips will be holding his annual Prestige ewe and ram sale, offering 22 Dorper and 11 White Dorper Rams as well as all the 2011 born ewes used in this internationally renowned stud
