The Pioneer Boran Group consisting of members Stephen Johnson, Keith Peinke, Ed Koller, Corn vd Watt and Jaco v Rensburg held their first sale at the Hobson and Co Auction Yard in Grahamstown on Thursday 30 April 2015.
A large crowd of interested farmers arrived on a miserable autumn day to view a top offering of strictly screened Boran Bulls and a fairly mixed offering of Boran-cross females.
Interest was excellent on both bulls and females with the emphasis on quality. A very encouraging sign was that there was good interest from outside the Eastern Cape with buyers registering from as far afield as Namibia and the Western Cape.
The top price achieved for a bull was R41,000.00 for Lot 2 bred by Stephen Johnson of Frontier Borans which was sold to Queenstown businessman and farmer Greg Harvey. Other notable prices were R 32,000.00 for Lot 8, also belonging to Stephen Johnson which was sold to a buyer from Namibia. A third Johnson bull, Lot 23 fetch R 30,000.00. 13 of the 16 bulls offered were sold for an average price of R 23,692.00, ranging between R 15,000.00 and R 41,000.00.
Under very difficult market circumstances the female sale was outstanding with quality cattle selling well. Stephen Johnson and Keith Peinke once again were the two breeders who achieved the highest prices
