The 27th Brakfontein Bull Sale was held at Brakfontein , Bedford on Friday 6th September . The ongoing drought was of huge concern to everybody involved with the auction , but 41 buyers still registered , mainly from the local areas . Buyers were very specific and were prepared to pay for bulls of their choice .
The 7 Braford type bulls were sold first and averaged R22250 . Lot 2 , a red bull with a white blaze fetched the highest price of R28000 . The bull was purchased by Andrew Deacon of Alexandria who has had huge success using these bulls in his herd
The 15 Bonsmara bulls were in demand and averaged R30200 with Lot 23 selling for R 48000 to Lowlands Farming from Natal .
The Hereford bulls once again surprised everybody and competition was keen on an outstanding offering of thick medium framed animals . Top price of R50000 was paid for lot 33 which was purchased by Lochart and Hugh Ainslie of Bedford . It was certainly a red letter day for the Ainslie family as Hugh had just become the proud father of a son earlier in the day ! The Hereford bulls averaged R27600 with bidders especially keen on bulls with pigment and confirmation .
The commercial females sold for market related prices with buyers generally delighted with their purchases .
Hobson & Co of Grahamstown held the auction with Brandon Leer the auctioneer , who commented that he was surprised by the interest shown in such trying agricultural and economic times .
